Best Sellers post 8: Truth in a memoir

I believe in order to be considered nonfiction you need to stay mostly (at least 98%) true. I believe this because you don’t want to read a book that is supposed to be pretty much completely true and then find out it was all lies or some of the major parts were altered or lied about. If that were me I would be not furious but very disappointed with the author.  I can understand if they were trying to recall something say from the age of 6 and couldn’t quite exactly remember everything so they had to fill in the blanks a little. But I don’t think you should change or alter the big events in your story because that’s the main part. That’s where your honesty counts the most, especially when writing a memoir. You as an author are telling about your life and I know it can be tempting to make it sound more interesting but that’s not what a memoir is for. If you want to make your life or maybe a fictional characters life in some cases super interesting and untrue then go write a fictional piece. There is a reason why nonfiction is nonfiction and fiction is fiction. Again if there are a few mishaps in your story due to the fact it was a long time ago that’s not a big deal because its little details that in all honesty are not that important. But if you go and change major events of the story that’s where it becomes wrong and in my opinion should not be considered a nonfiction or memoir piece.

Explain what you plan to read next and why

I actually am reading Looking for Alaska right now by John Green. So far it has been a really interesting and engaging book. The reason why I decided to read this book is actually due to my best sellers class. In the class one of the things we have to do is a book talk that you share out to the class and in that book talk there is a trailer you choose to show about a book. Well one of my friends Ashley shared out her book trailer of John Greens Looking for Alaska. Once I saw the trailer I was hooked and needed to read it! Although I will admit I was a little reluctant to read a John Green book because all I ever hear about are his books especially The Fault in Our Stars (Which I think I'm also going to read). Again it has been a pretty good book and I am not disappointed. How did you get started reading your current book? Anyways that's why I started reading John Green's Looking for Alaska.

Best Sellers Post 6: Why should we want kids to read books anyway?

Kids need to read books. Reading strengthens the mind, it opens up your vocabulary greatly, is a great hobby to do when you have down time etc. Without reading you become less literate in the English language. So many kids learn and grow a love for reading through books, no kid wants to read the newspaper verses reading a children’s novel. You take away books and you take away a kids love for reading. I know they can read magazines or something short and sweet that interests them but is that really strengthening their reading skills? Children should be challenged a little and read a book or more preferably books. Again by reading books kids’ minds grow more. When a book is challenging there is a lot of having to go back and re-read a chapter or line from the text (I speak from previous experience). By doing this you’re using your mind to go back and try and really understand what the author means or are trying to emphasize. Books are not always enjoyable to kids especially when it’s a book they really don’t like (Again speaking from experience), getting yourself to read the book is like pulling teeth. But when you read something you enjoy reading becomes exciting and interesting and more kids want to pick up a book and read. An example of this is when Leavitt says “A good book is a good book,” I believe that to be true because when I find a good book I am completely wrapped up in it, and it makes me want to read more and more no magazine or newspaper article have ever done that for me. This is why you want kids to read books, there are so many things books can do for you books can even introduce you to your career. There are books about everything and anything; books spark a student’s interest learning. That’s why we should really want kids to grow up loving books, and wanting to read them verses hating them.  

Symbol's for each of my main characters in Miss peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

My two main characters right now are Jacob and Miss peregrine. My symbol for Jacob would have to be fire. I believe fire is a good symbol for him because he is very determined and it takes a lot to put him out. He keeps burning on even though things look grim. Jacob is so determined to go to the island so he begs and begs and finally gets to go again showing his determination. Jacob also can be dangerous like fire for example when he decides he is going to go to the house by himself was probably not the best idea nor was coming to a strange island he didn't know very well yet. For miss Peregrine I would of course give her a bird as her symbol. Her symbol would be a bird because that's how Jacobs grandfather used to describe her as a bird. Miss Peregrine was also tall and lean which to me makes me think of a birds body. And finally Miss peregrine was quit and in my opinion I think birds can tend to be very quiet at times unless their bothered by people or need to communicate with other birds. What symbols would you give your characters in your book right now? Would it be challenging to think of a symbol for them or easy?

Why do you think the author wrote this work?

I believe the author wrote Miss Peregrines Home For Peculiar Children because he was trying to show the readers its ok to believe in something that may seem stupid or not real because it just might possibly end up being real. I think he is trying to show this through his book because in the beginning when Jacob is just a young child Jacobs grandfather is telling him these stories of where he grew up. How he was raised by a bird, new a girl who could levitate and boys who could lift boulders over their heads without ease. Now Jacob believed all of this because he was so young but as he grew older he stopped believing and even got angry with his grandfather for lying to him. It wasn't until after a tragic event he decided to believe his grandfathers many crazy stories and try and find the mystical island all of the stories were based on. Well Jacob found the island and Miss Peregrine even though everyone thought he wouldn't and would just find disappointment. Instead of this Jacob proved them wrong and found what his grandfather had been telling him. This proves that the author wrote the story because he was trying to show the readers its ok to believe in something that may seem stupid or not real because it could possibly end up being real.

Book Review: Allgeiant

The book Allegiant by Veronica Roth was a great book although I was a little disappointed because it wasn't as good in my opinion as the other books Divergent and Insurgent. I can't give much of a summary because that would ruin the whole series for you. But what I can give away is that Tris and some of her friends go and explore a new place. At first it is weird but as time goes on it begins to feel more comfortable. Tris really finds herself and grows up throughout this book which I really enjoyed experiencing her different changes as the book went on. I would give this book a 4 out of 5 because it wasn't my absolute favorite book out of the series but it was still page turner for sure! The type of reader who would enjoy this is someone who likes action, drama, romance, and being on the edge of their seat in anticipation. A writing style the author uses is she tells the story from two peoples point of view which at first I thought I wasn't going to enjoy but after reading the book I realized I really enjoyed! Veronica Roth was also very descriptive in her writing so much so to where I would feel like I was there. When the characters would get hurt for example she would use such description I would cringe at the thought of it. I definitely recommend reading this book because overall it was a really good book but be sure to read the other two books in the Divergent series first!
